Incorrect DOS version

Explanation: DOS is refusing to run the program that you asked it to run because the version number of the program is different than the version number of DOS that you used to boot up the system.

Diagnosis: DOS is especially finicky about refusing to run DOS commands and programs that are not the exact same version as what is loaded on the PC. This is designed to prevent problems that might occur if you ran an older utility on a newer version of DOS where things might have changed. The DOS commands are programmed to check the current version and produce this error message if there is a mismatch.

Recommendation:

• Check the current version of DOS using the "VER" command at the DOS prompt. Check the version number of the command you are trying to run by looking at the time stamp; if you see "6:21 am" for example that means DOS 6.21, or if you see "11:11 am" that means Windows 95 build 1111 (OEM SR2). Make sure you are running the correct version of the command.
• If possible, remove old versions of software from the PC after you upgrade to a newer operating system.
