I am having strange problems when I use my WinModem or software modem

Explanation: You are experiencing errors or strange problems using your WinModem.

Diagnosis: Software modems replace some of the circuitry on the modem with software programs and drivers that perform a similar function. This is done for the purpose of saving cost, since it removes some of the components from the actual modem itself. This forces the main system processor to perform these tasks. Whenever the modem is running, there is a piece of software running to handle some of the functions that a true modem handles in hardware. Unfortunately, incompatibilities and conflicts with software that expect a real hardware modem are common.

Recommendation:

  • Do not use one of these modems. Use a real modem that performs all of its features in hardware.
  • This site does not presently contain much specific troubleshooting information for WinModems. Some of the problems you may experience with them are common to real hardware modems, but some are unique. If you don't find what you are looking for, I'd recommend consulting your manufacturer's technical support site.
