My system thinks I have a locked key lock but there isn't one on my case!

Explanation: The system is giving an error message or refusing to boot because it says that the keyboard is locked, or the case is locked, but there is no key lock on the case.

Diagnosis: The motherboard connector for the key lock and/or power LED has been miswired. The motherboard may be faulty.

Recommendation:

  • Open the case and check the connection from the key lock to the motherboard. This may be a two-pin or a five-pin connection (with older PCs, the two wires from the key lock are combined with the two wires for the power LED into a five-pin connector). Make sure the power LED connector is inserted correctly and not onto the pins reserved for the key lock.
  • If the problem persists, troubleshoot the motherboard.
