[ The PC Guide | Troubleshooting and Repair Guide | The Troubleshooting Expert | Troubleshooting Boot Problems ] Boot Problem Troubleshooting Walkthrough This page is the beginning of the troubleshooting walkthrough of the boot process. You will taken through the entire boot process of a typical modern PC and asked questions at each step to diagnose common causes of boot problems. This is a similar process to what I might use in diagnosing in person a PC that will not boot. Remember to read the description in the contents frame (here) and choose the correct answer from the index frame on the left. Always use the links, to make sure you stay on the correct troubleshooting path.
We start with the system power: is the system power supply functioning? Check to see if any LEDs (lights) are lit on the system case and to hear if the power supply fan is blowing. If either of them is operating then the system power supply is running. Basically, if you hear or see anything lit up or moving in the PC box itself (not the monitor or external peripherals that have their own power supplies) then the PC's power supply is at least on and basically functional.
