They can also check the voltage of batteries to see if they are worn out, check if fuses have blown, and so forth. Inexpensive multimeters can be had for under $10 at electronics stores; fancy ones cost much more of course. :^) Be sure to read the instructions before using a multimeter. Note that multimeters are also useful for testing live equipment such as power supplies, but this is not a good idea unless you have been specially trained in how to do this safely.
