Old Site Updates - March 1998
March 29, 1998, 10:00 am EST:
- Six Month Anniversary: Yesterday was the six month anniversary of The
PC Guide! Thanks once again to everyone who has helped make the site a success.
- Chipset Pages Revised: I have revised the Reference Guide pages on the System Chipset. I added a comparison chart for
sixth-generation chipsets, and updated many of the pages. I also added a link to an area
of Anand's Hardware Tech Page that
contains much additional information on non-Intel fifth-generation chipsets.
- New Disk Edition Version Released: The April 1998 version of the Disk Edition is now released, replacing the original December
1997 version that has been shipping up until now. There may be a delay of several days in
filling new orders, as I make the switchover, so your patience is appreciated. All
customers who purchased the original Disk Edition version are eligible for the special
upgrade prices listed on the order page.
March 22, 1998, 10:00 pm EST:
- Boot Process Troubleshooter Reorganized: I have completely reorganized
the structure of the Boot Process Troubleshooting
Walkthrough. I collapsed the deep nesting that was previously there into a single
folder. This will solve the problems previously experienced by some Disk Edition users due to a bug in Microsoft's Scandisk
program.
- New Hardware Site Link: I added a link to Jeff's PC Hardware Review.
This is a new general hardware site getting up to speed, with a focus on overclocking.
- Processor Reference Overhaul: I have reviewed, updated and added new
content to over 30 pages in the Processor Reference
section. This included updating comments on the various processor families to reflect the
current state of the art, and adding details on the 333 MHz Pentium II and 266 MHz AMD K6.
March 14, 1998, 10:00 pm EST:
- Not This Week: Unfortunately, I won't be able to update the site this
weekend. This is due to personal issues, a power failure at my home, sunspots, icy roads,
bad breath and any other excuse I can think of. Sorry. :^)
March 12, 1998, 10:00 pm EST:
- AWOL: Sorry for disappearing and not providing Tips of The Day for the
last few days! I got wrapped up in things and sort of forgot about the site. :^) Oops.
March 8, 1998, 7:30 pm EST:
- Build Your Own: I have written a new column on PC home building, in
RealAudio format. You can find this listed as the feature commentary on PC World NewsRadio.
- Mind The Pocket Protector: I am pleased to announce that The PC Guide
has been awarded the March 1998 Thermodynamic Award from the Nerds Revolution@ry Front!
- HPC98: Shiloh Jennings, webmaster of Hardware.PairNET.com, recently wrote me to
tell me about a new forum on his site. This forum is being used by his readers to discuss
what they'd like to see in the next PC hardware standard. Interested? Join them here and maybe have an impact
on the next generation of PCs.
- A Shocking Experience: A gentleman wrote me this week to tell me about
how he received an electrical shock while working inside and unplugged PC, after he
brushed against a modem that still had the phone cord attached to it. I modified my Warnings page to add a note about this possibility.
- Revised Processor Pages: I have begun tackling Reference Guide pages
associated with the system processor, as part of my
spring cleaning of the site. This week I updated numerous pages covering processor
background, physical characteristics, and external architecture and operation.
- Every Week: ... I make some minor changes and updates to various pages,
so why should this one be any different? :^)
March 1, 1998, 8:00 pm EST:
- MISadventures: I am pleased to announce a new feature that you may be
interested in. I have begun a column on ZDNet's Help
Channel called "MISadventures". This is a PC hardware column that is
written in a unique way: it is in a fictional format. The material is at a higher level
than what you will find here on The PC Guide, but you may find it fun to read even if
you're a more advanced PC user. Read the
premiere episode here.
- The Lull Continues: Another small set of updates this week; my
apologies. I run this site "on the side", in addition to my many
responsibilities in the "real world". :^) As a result, my available time varies
from week to week. I should have a bit more time for more extensive updates within the
next couple of weeks. In particular, I plan to overhaul the section on chipsets, adding
much more information to it.
- System Resources Update: I revised the Reference Guide pages related to
system resources, as part of my ongoing effort to
keep the site up to date.
- Minor Changes: I made small corrections to a couple of different pages.
