Video Memory Technologies

The video memory is such an important component of the video card, and indirectly the entire PC, that several new memory technologies have been created specifically for it. The goal: to improve the speed with which information can be pumped into and out of the video memory, to keep system performance high as the video system tries to do more and more. This section takes a detailed look at the various memory technologies now being used on video cards.

Note: All of the technologies described in this section are types of dynamic RAM (DRAM). For a more complete discussion of the different types of memory, see this part of the chapter on memory. For a more general discussion of memory and memory concepts, see here.
