Parts of the Uninterruptible Power Supply

In this section we will take a brief look at the various parts and components that make up a typical UPS. Focus is on smaller units more commonly used for home and small businesses; larger units have many, many features that it would take a long time to describe and that don't have much relevance to the typical PC user. (Some of these units can be room-sized and provide backup for entire companies!)

Warning: Because a UPS contains a battery, it has the ability to produce live AC at its output even when disconnected from the line power. Do not open a UPS and tinker inside unless you both know what you are doing, and disconnect the battery first. Read your owner's manual; any instructions they give there supercede anything you read on this site (or elsewhere for that matter.)
