Power Conditioning

Most (but not all) UPS models not only provide backup power, but also condition the line power coming from the wall. The ability of the unit to do this is dependent on both its design and its quality level. The best UPS units that use a true "online" design provide the best possible power conditioning because the output provided to the equipment is completely separate from the input power to the UPS. As a result, any problems from the line only affect the battery charger. However, even less expensive UPS models usually incorporate some line conditioning to protect the loads when they are running off standard AC power. They also typically provide surge suppression capabilities.

UPSes also automatically regulate their output. This means that as the battery's voltage changes (as it discharges) the UPS will compensate to make sure the loads will have the power they need to keep operating properly.
