Real-Time Clock and CMOS Memory Chip

This chip holds the real-time clock that keeps the date and time on your PC, as well as the CMOS RAM that holds your PC's BIOS settings. It is powered by the PC's built in battery, which may in some cases be built into the real-time clock package itself. This chip is often marked "Dallas", after Dallas Semiconductor, the company that makes a large number of them.
