Disk Edition "Extras"
To provide additional value to my Disk Edition customers, I have included some
"extras" above and beyond what is seen in the on-line version of the site. These
extras are included on the CD-ROM version of the Disk Edition, and can also be accessed as
part of the download version if desired:
- Adobe Acrobat (PDF) Version of The PC Guide: In addition to the regular web files
that make up the Disk Edition, most of the web site material is provided in a single
(large!) PDF file. Included in the file is a structured index to the material. In this PDF
version, the end pages of the site have been concatenated together into "topics"
as found in the topic index, to provide for easier reading, and especially, easier
printing of the material for those who want to use it on paper. The file is also easily
searchable for text strings. The only exclusion from the PDF file is the boot process troubleshooter; due to its structured,
flowchart-based design, it does not convert easily to a flat file. Also, some of the other
troubleshooting sections contain some redundant information, because they were designed to
run in HTML using the index frame to reference appropriate content pages.
- Adobe Acrobat Reader: The latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader
software (for Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000) is included for use with the PDF file mentioned
above.
- Full Topic Index: An expanded, full topic index of the Disk Edition is
provided, which shows the detailed bottom-level links to the over 2,700 content pages that
make up the site.
- PC Webopaedia Lite: The downloadable version of the popular PC Webopaedia web site. This is a Windows
help file containing the hyperlinked definitions of thousands of computer terms,
encompassing not just hardware but many different areas of computing. Its a
tremendously useful resource and a great complement to the more detailed content of The PC
Guide. On the CD-ROM, both an installable self-extracting archive and a version that can
be run directly from the CD-ROM are included.
- Chris Hare's Hardware Pages: The latest versions of a collection of very useful
reference information pages. This material can
be found online here, and includes the following:
- Computer Hardware Links: One of the very best pages of links to
hardware-related resources on the net. Requires an Internet connection to use.
- Processor Upgrading FAQ: The best resource of its kind for specific advice and
assistance in performing a CPU upgrade.
- Processor and Socket Charts: Useful reference charts containing tons of useful
reference details on the various AMD, Cyrix and Intel CPUs, and the sockets they employ.
- CPU Electrical Specs: Detailed electrical characteristic information on
various processors.
- CPU Speed Chart: Information on various processors and their relevant
speed settings.
- Chipsets Chart: Specifications for dozens of common chipsets.
I plan to add more "extras" to the Disk Edition over time.
